Musing Mondays – Staying Up Late

This week’s Musing Mondays, hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading:

What’s the last thing you stayed up half the night reading because it was so good you couldn’t put it down?

I normally struggle to get my 8 hours’ sleep anyway, between working too hard and cycling to work (about 1 hour each way but I have to have breakfast twice), but The Seamstress by Frances de Pontes Peebles kept me up until well past 1am a few months ago. Between the exciting plot (a troupe of bandits led by a tall angry woman/high society being revolutionised by a country girl – oh and both are in Brazil) and the great characters, I just didn’t want to put it down! I said as much in my review.

Other recent contenders: I read more of Toxic Shock than I should have (review to come soon), before going to sleep, ditto 84 Charing Cross Road/The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street.

Given the number of great books I have read this year, this demonstrates two things:

1) I don’t read before bed enough

2) I need my sleep.

  1. What an excellent question! I have to say, I would stay up late every night reading if the Man didn’t remind me to go to bed, turn the light out etc. Not that I don’t love him, just that I do love reading – and I’m not very disciplined!
