Musing Mondays – Cause

Today’s Musing Mondays, hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading:

Have you ever read a book that inspired you to take up a cause? What book was it, and what is/was the cause?

The only book I can think of that fits into this question is Sleeping Naked is Green by Vanessa Farquharson, in which the author tries to find a new environmentally friendly action to undertake each day. I won’t pretend that it made me a vegan purist overnight, but I did make more of an effort to switch off lights after leaving a room etc.

One of her tips is to shower in the dark (thus saving electricity) – and she makes it sound fantastic. My bathroom unfortunately does not have a window and I’m not confident enough to stumble around in the complete darkness, but it’s a recommendation I’ll be taking up when I do finally live in a house which has bathroooms with windows!

I read very little non-fiction, and what non-fiction I do read is primarily memoirs/blog-to-book style non-fiction (I’m currently reading Elna Baker’s memoir The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance), so I suppose it’s not surprising that I haven’t encountered all that many causes in my reading.

  1. Hehe – loved the thought of stumbling around in the dark. Our bathroom does not even have the luxury of any lighting at all – so it’s a torch to use the loo in the night! Didn’t realise that it was eco friendly…
