What’s the last book you were really EXCITED to read?
And, were you excited about it in advance? Or did the excitement bloom while you were reading it?
Are there any books you’re excited about right NOW?
I read many, many (too many) book blogs, so I see a lot of the hype that builds up around books like A Visit from the Goon Squad, The Finkler Question and The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet. Last year, the book on everyone’s lips was The Passage.
However, I have enough of a book purchasing problem as it is (see the “Book buying” category), so I very rarely purchase brand new. I wait until a book turns up on Bookmooch or in my favourite second hand bookshop, the Notting Hill Book and Comic Exchange. Or in my local library (which is remarkably good at getting the Big Books in).
As a result, it can be months or even years before I get my hands on a book that I’ve read 20+ reviews of. I got 1000 Autumns from the library and loved it. So much so that I have insisted people read/buy it.
I was delighted when A Visit from the Goon Squad showed up on Bookmooch and I’m reading it at the moment, but I’m a bit disappointed – it’s not grabbing me the way 1000 Autumns did.
So in answer to the question, the excitement builds long before buying the book, and if it is an excellent book, it is sustained while reading it, but often it dissipates a bit on reading.
