Thoughts and other Miscellany

Sunday Salon – Shopping!

This has been a very quiet week compared to last week – a solitary day at work taking care of some work admin, then a few days up north with The Physicist – holiday for me and thesis writing for him. I managed to pick up one book (see below) at the Wednesday Lancaster market. Back down to London for a spot of flat-cleaning and extensive clothes-shopping at Bluewater… so it’s been a pleasantly quiet week.

Which has meant lots of reading! This week I read:

Storm Front by Jim Butcher – this is the first of the Harry Dresden series. While I wasn’t completely sold, I’ll be reading the second to see if the writing improves, because I love the idea of a magical private investigator.

A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan – if anyone saw me tweeting on Thursday, you will know I Did Not Get This. Still mulling over how to approach reviewing this.

The first of the Stephanie Plum series, One for the Money by Janet Evanovich – this was the book that I picked up for £1.50 at the market. Like Storm Front, it’s a slightly rocky start to a series that I’ll be continuing with for at least a few books.

The Survivor by Sean Slater – a very brutal police procedural dealing with a school shoot-out.

I’ve started When God Was A Rabbit by Sarah Winman, and was very much enjoying it until they moved away from London; now I’m a bit bored. It’s reminding me very strongly of The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender, which I read in May and loved.

Quite a few there then! I’m up to 57 books for the year, which I’m really pleased with – that’s far more than I have read in a very long time, and some of them have been real crackers.

On a bloggy note, I’m going through all my old reviews, as short as they may be, and adding a host of tags: year of reading, rating, author name, gender and nationality, place of setting, genres and anything else important. WordPress being what it is, this is resulting in old articles getting re-published. In order to avoid spamming people’s RSS feeds, I am taking the blog private for a half-hour at a time in order to make these changes – thanks for your patience.
