Thoughts and other Miscellany

Looking back on October, looking forward to November

In October I got through 11 books, not a bad effort.

They were:

The White Queen – Philippa Gregory – 8/10 – review not yet posted

The Tenderness of Wolves – Stef Penney – not yet reviewed

The Quickie – James Patterson – 0/10 (DNF)

The Borrower – Rebecca Makkai – 6/10

The Bancroft Strategy – Robert Ludlum – 8/10 – review not yet posted

Feet of Clay – Ffyona Campbell – 2/10 (DNF)

The Spare Room – Helen Garner – 8/10 – review not yet posted

The Sense of an Ending – Julian Barnes – not yet reviewed

A Cold Heart – Jonathan Kellerman – 4/10 (DNF)

The Charm School – Nelson Demille – 5/10 (DNF) – review not yet posted

The Women of the Cousins’ War – Philippa Gregory – not yet reviewed

Coming up, I’ve got – lots. Most of it was on this page a month ago (and in preceding months) and I’m too ashamed to write about them all again; at the moment I’m trying to get back to reading one book at a time, currently I’m on three:

Fool Moon by Jim Butcher

The Partly Cloudy Patriot by Sarah Vowell and

Gold Boy, Emerald Girl by Yiyun Lee.

  1. You gave up on four books? Good for you, I try to give up more often too. Why read a book that’s no fun!

Where do I know Jim Butcher from? I don’t think I read anything by him but I associate the name with something good. 🙂

    1. Jim Butcher writes the Harry Dresden files – magical private investigator mysteries. I previously reviewed the first one, Storm Front, and gave it 6/10 (good plot, good characters, awkward writing); Annabel at Gaskella loves the Dresden files, as does Swapna at S. Krishna’s Books?

Since I gave myself the 100 pages/25% rule, it’s such a relief to give up quickly on a book that’s not enjoyable!
