Musing Mondays – Interruptions

This week’s Musing Monday asks:

Other than working at a job, what is your biggest interruption to reading? What takes you away from your book(s)

Two easy answers to this: the Internet, and cycling.

I spend so much time on the Internet these days without even trying… Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest are my social networks of choice, then there’s everybody’s posts on Google Reader to get through, my own blog to write of course (actually, two of them), and then there’s always BBC News, Sydney Morning Herald, and general link-bait.

I do the vast majority of my reading on my commutes; I feel like I’m lazing about if I’m at home and reading (except weekends) – because I have a bit of a work addiction, home time is usually pretty hectic with chores and home admin. But when I chose to cycle rather than get the Tube, there goes my reading time!

  1. Link-Bait! Yes, not easy to resist; mostly a waste of time, but sometimes a whole wonderful new (waste-of-time) world opens up! Starting my own blog is a new adventure, but a lot of time goes by catching up on other’s blogs as well as also reviewing books and – as you pointed out recently – some books are a labour of hatred to get through. I’ve got one like that at the moment. Then, finding time to write one’s own writing as well as research… The days are too short, but mostly fun.

  2. Erm, life? You know: cooking, cleaning, spending time with my man and our friends and family, shopping, gardening… Plus of course the less essential but also distracting TV and internet. It’s amazing I fit in any reading at all!

  3. In the main I would say going to the gym/swimming and housework. But some times life is too short to Hoover and it might go for a few more days if I have a good book on the go.

Blogging I love as a hobby but that also eats into the reading time.
