Musing Mondays – Magazines

A few weeks’ worth of Musing Mondays:

Do you read magazines? If so, which ones? If not, why not?

Not all that regularly; I like reading Stylist when I get the Tube on a Wednesday morning, but that’s free.

Glamour magazine is my guilty indulgence for long train trips or particularly bus trips; I get travel sick in buses so it’s good to have something I can flick through only half paying attention.

What attracts you to a book blog? What puts you off in a book blog? Do you share personal stuff on your book blog?

I love to see a real personal impact – to be able to distinguish the writer of the blog from others from their tone of writing (Lyndsey from Teadevotee and Raych at booksidoneread both have fantastic writing tones), or because they give me a bit of insight into their lives (I love reading about Eva’s various adventures with Thistle, and the trip to Mexico…). I like to be able to click through to the “About Me” page and get a sense of who they are, why they’re writing a blog, what their story is.

I find overly commercialised blogs with lots of author guest posts and obvious publisher input a little odd – while author interviews are quite interesting, it feels like the publisher is being permitted to push too much of an agenda when there’s an interview/guest post from every author. Just my opinion of course, I’m sure there are many people who love the extra insight into a book!

I’m also put off when there’s lots of memes – I guess standard is 2-3 a week (I have to acknowledge, I do 3 memes a week – Musing Mondays, Booking through Thursdays and Sunday Salon); but I don’t tend to stick around when there’s a meme nearly every day instead of book reviews and unprompted content.

I share a fair amount of personal stuff on my blog, although I work quite hard to keep the true identities of those close to me concealed, and I hardly post any personal pictures – and certainly none where other people’s faces are visible. This is really important to me, although I can’t quite formulate why.
