BTT – Cover story

They say you can’t judge a book by its cover, but there’s no question that it can make a difference!

What book(s) have your favourite covers? Something that’s perfect for the story, the tone, the colours, the mood…

And did you pick up the book BECAUSE of the cover? Or were you going to read it anyway, and the cover was just serendipitous?

Some of my favourite books have my favourite covers:

I really enjoyed The Seamstress, but I probably only picked it up because I loved the blue of the cover and all the tiny compartments and knick-knacks.

The copy of The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet which I borrowed from the library had this beautiful cover in cloth; some of the light blue was sparkly too. I love the cover of the copy I bought eventually too:

But I had picked it up originally because I had seen good review of the book, not because of the cover.

It’s only if I’m browsing at the market that the cover would come into it; my book selections are almost always because I’ve heard good things about the book.

The following are more of my favourite covers… anyone see a particular colour theme here?

I love blue and green. Mostly blue.

  1. I agree re the hardback cover of The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet, that was one of the attractions for me too! Mr Fox by Helen Oyeyemi had a great cover too. Oh, and I really like the black and gold series of covers for Neil Gaiman’s books (Headline Publishing?).
