Thoughts and other Miscellany

Looking back on October, looking forward to November

In October I got through 14 books, which has to be a record for me. Helped, no doubt, by three weeks of holiday.

They were:

The End of Your Life Book Club – Will Schwalbe – 10/10

The Girl on the Stairs – Louise Welsh – 4/10 (DNF)

The Kingmaker’s Daughter – Philippa Gregory – 8/10

A Novel Bookstore – Laurence Cossé – 6/10

My Brilliant Friend – Elena Ferrante – not yet reviewed

Island of Wings – Karin Altenberg – 4/10 (DNF)

The Hottest Dishes of the Tartar Cuisine – Alina Bronsky – not yet reviewed

The Casual Vacancy – J K Rowling – 4/10 (DNF)

Over the Rainbow – Paul Pickering – 2/10 (DNF)

The Slaughteryard – Esteban Echeverria – 5/10 (DNF)

Shogun – James Clavell – 4/10 (DNF)

The Unfinished Work of Elizabeth D – Nichole Bernier – 8/10

Thyme of Death – Susan Albert Wittig – 8/10

Blackberry Winter – Sarah Jio – 8/10

Of course, I might have got through so many because I abandoned so many. But I finished off the month with a good run of 8/10s, so I can’t complain.

Coming up, I’ve got – lots. Advent with Atwood is on its way, I’ve agreed to a group read of The Night Watch, I brought home a zillion books from the Simon & Schuster event… I’ve got to get my reading hat on!
