Musing Mondays – DNF

This week’s Musing Mondays asks

Is there a particular book that is your nemesis–the book you’re determined to one day finish?

One day I will read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. One day.

In general, though, I’m pretty quick to abandon a book without too much remorse. I might put it back on the shelf if I think it deserves another go when I’m less disposingly disposed.

And last week’s:

What was the last book you could not finish and why?

At time of writing, I haven’t abandoned Margaret Atwood’s The Edible Woman yet, but am likely to do so within the next 40 pages or so; I cannot abide a protagonist who does stupid, unpredictable things, and she’s just done exactly that – run off from her friends and climbed a few gates running away from them. For no reason, just because she felt like it. And then she climbed under the bed. I don’t understand!!

Most recently reviewed, Island of Wings by Karin Altenberg – it was so unbearably bleak.

  1. Just gave up on The Elephant Keepers’ Children by Peter Hoeg. Made me wonder if I had lost my love of reading! What a relief to find I haven’t. I haven’t read Miss Smila and thought I’d try this one. Oh dear.

    1. Well, I try to stick out 100 pages or 25% whichever is shorter; I’m just writing a review right now of The Edible Woman which got a DNF at page 100 because nothing really seemed to have happened yet, the story is incredibly slow to get going.

  2. One day I’ll read the second and third LOTR. But like you, one day. I found The Hobbit and first Rings so tedious, but they are so famous it’s difficult to say never. Characters that do weird things for a reason are okay, suddenly and without reason, difficult!

  3. Yes, The Edible Woman was a weird one- I read it through to the end and will post a short summary of my thoughts soon. It was very slow paced- also agree with you there. I read The Hobbit a few weeks ago and I plan to read LOTR in 2013- we’ll see how I go with those…
