Sophie Cornish and Holly Tucker really have done it – started a business from scratch and made it to the bigtime. You may use notonthehighstreet.com for your own gift shopping (I just had a quick browse and my credit card started to shake quietly in my wallet…) and thus recognise the name of a multi-award-winning, multi-million pound online business. In this handbook to starting a business, they set out how they did and what they learnt along the way.
The book is quite accessible, starting right from the beginning (so you’ve got an idea, what now…) and heading through finance, launching a business, marketing, and keeping it all balanced. They define key business jargon and recount a few of their own hair-raising moments along the way. It’s honest (well, I like to think it’s honest!) and heartfelt, showing the way while highlighting the pitfalls. I found the chapters on finance and marketing particularly helpful and well-written – not condescending but full of good explanations and tips.
Some of you may know that I am trying (admittedly, not very hard, given my limited down-time!) to establish myself as a translator and proof-reader; you can find more information at YES Languages. So this book was mostly relevant for me, although I don’t have a kitchen table, and the book focused mostly on manufacturing-type businesses, rather than services. Nevertheless, I definitely picked up some useful tips.
