The Marriage Game by Alison Weir (not rated)

My DNF rule is that to count a book as having read it, and to review it, I have to have read at least 100 pages or 25%, whichever is shorter.

Of the hefty hardback The Marriage Game by Alison Weir which thudded onto the doormat today, I achieved neither: 25% would have been 104.5 pages, and I only made it to 60.

It’s not a bad book and if you like romance and intrigue with a dose of history and royalty, this would be right up your alley. When I read the pitch from the publisher, it sounded interesting academically as well as a good story. But I found (perhaps I should have seen this coming), the constant topic of marriage was as wearing for me as it was for Elizabeth, particularly twinned with her scandalous and ill-conceived (no pun intended) dalliance with Robert Dudley.

So I gave up and put it in the book bin for keener readers.
